Lessie Bates Davis Neighborhood House, a settlement house since 1909
1909
East St. Louis, Illinois
It began in 1909 in a cottage near 9th and Winstanley as the Slavonic Settlement, run by Methodist missionaries for the Bohemian immigrants who had come to work the National Stock Yards. Lessie Bates Davis raised the money for a proper building, which opened at 13th and Winstanley in 1940 and took her name. More than a century later it is still running social service programs across the Metro East.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
