Lembeck and Betz Eagle Brewing, a quarter million barrels a year

Henry Lembeck came out of the German army in 1849, worked as a carpenter, ran a grocery, and in 1869 went into brewing here with John Betz, who had apprenticed under his brother-in-law David Yuengling and insisted on the eagle in the name. The brewery filled four downtown blocks and was making a quarter of a million barrels a year at its height. Prohibition closed it in 1920, and the last of it came down in 1997.
