Penn's sons granted the town the right to hold a market twice a week, and it has been held ever since on the same ground, the oldest continuously operating farmers market in the country. Plain-dress farmers still sell at stands their families have held for generations, alongside the sausage, chow-chow and shoofly pie the region runs on.
