Lakewood packs more than fifty thousand people into five and a half square miles on the Lake Erie shore, which makes it the densest city in the state. The streetcar did it. Fewer than five hundred people lived here in 1890, fifteen thousand by 1910 and seventy thousand by 1930, all of it built out in apartment blocks and narrow lots within walking distance of the Detroit Avenue line.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
