Lake Calumet, where Chicago's third airport was supposed to go

Mayor Richard M. Daley proposed a third regional airport on and around this lake in 1990, at a cost of about 10.8 billion dollars. Building it meant clearing the whole of Hegewisch along with parts of Burnham and Calumet City. It took four attempts in the Illinois House to move the plan to the state Senate, where the Senate president would not commit the roughly 2 billion dollar state share. Daley declared the project dead in July 1992 and went back to expanding O'Hare and Midway.
