Lafreniere Park, built on the old Jefferson Downs racetrack
1982
Metairie, Louisiana

Hurricane Betsy wrecked the Jefferson Downs racetrack here in 1965 and the track was rebuilt elsewhere, leaving the ground empty. Construction on a parish park started in 1977 and it was dedicated in 1982. The name comes from the Lafreniere family land grant that covered this ground, and from Nicolas Chauvin de Lafreniere, who led the 1768 revolt against Spain's takeover of Louisiana and was executed for it in 1769.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
