Krainz Woods, the projects that produced the Dramatics and the Floaters
1942
Detroit, Michigan
The neighbourhood is named for John Krainz Jr., a Detroit soldier killed in the Second World War, and it holds the Sojourner Truth Homes, built in 1942 for Black defence workers over violent white opposition. The Dramatics and the Floaters both came out of those buildings. Malcolm X lived on Keystone Street here in the 1950s, and the basketball player Spencer Haywood grew up in the neighbourhood a decade later.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
