Born Isabella Baumfree, enslaved in a Dutch-speaking Hudson Valley household, and sold away from her family at nine for a hundred dollars and some sheep. She walked to freedom in 1826, sued successfully to recover her son, and became the voice that asked a women's convention what a woman was.
