Jonas Salk tests the polio vaccine on children in Sewickley
1952
Sewickley, Pennsylvania
The first human doses of Jonas Salk's polio vaccine were given here in 1952, at what was then the D.T. Watson Home for Crippled Children. Salk worked with the home's medical director Jessie Wright, and the first subjects were children already disabled by polio, along with staff and local volunteers. The home had opened in 1917 on a summer estate left by a Pittsburgh lawyer and his wife, and it still teaches children with disabilities.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
