Salk asked Louis Kahn for somewhere he could invite Picasso, and got two travertine blocks facing each other across a courtyard with a single channel of water running out toward the Pacific. The labs have no interior columns so any wall can be moved. The concrete was mixed with volcanic ash to a Roman recipe.
