John Stevens runs America's first steam locomotive in his own back garden

Colonel John Stevens was seventy six when he built a steam locomotive with a multitubular boiler and a circular track to run it on, here on his Castle Point estate. He raised one side of the loop thirty feet above the other to prove to sceptics that a railway did not have to be level, and from 1826 he let the public ride it. Five years later he and his son chartered the Camden and Amboy. His family later gave the land for Stevens Institute of Technology, which opened here in 1870.
