John Muir High and the first West Coast desegregation order

The district opened its second high school here in 1926 as John Muir Technical, serving a mixed northwest Pasadena of Black, Japanese American and Mexican American families. Jackie Robinson graduated in 1936, a year behind his brother Mack, who had finished second to Jesse Owens over 200 metres in Berlin. In 1970 a federal judge ordered Pasadena to integrate all its schools, the first such order against a city on the West Coast. Busing was phased out by 1990 and the school resegregated.
