James J. Hill and the Great Northern
1893

Hill pushed a railway to Puget Sound with no federal land grant and no subsidy, surveying easy grades instead of taking the money, and it was the only northern transcontinental that never went bankrupt. His 36,000-square-foot house has its own pipe organ and a skylit art gallery.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
