James Brown's Augusta
1933
Augusta, Georgia

James Brown grew up poor in Augusta, shining shoes and dancing for change on Ninth Street, and the city he left came to define him: he kept an office here, gave out turkeys and toys every year, and the arena and a Broad Street statue carry his name. The statue stands at street level rather than on a pedestal, at his request, so people could stand next to him.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
