The drum break Clyde Stubblefield played on James Brown's Funky Drummer in 1970 became the most sampled piece of recorded music there is: it is underneath Public Enemy, N.W.A, Run-DMC, LL Cool J, and hundreds of records after them. He was paid nothing for any of it and credited on almost none. He settled in Madison and for decades played a weekly gig in small rooms downtown, where you could go and watch, for the price of a drink, the man whose four bars everyone had been using. The university gave him an honorary degree the year he died.
