Jacob Riis commuted to the slums from Richmond Hill

Richmond Hill was laid out in the 1860s as one of the country's early planned commuter suburbs, built around a Long Island Rail Road stop and sold on the promise of trees and clean air. Jacob Riis moved his family out here in 1886 and rode the train in to photograph Lower East Side tenements for How the Other Half Lives, published in 1890, which pushed New York into its first serious housing law. A small triangle in the neighbourhood carries his name.
