Jack Northrop Field and the plant that became SpaceX
1939
Hawthorne, California
Hawthorne cut a mile of dirt runway here in 1939 as its side of the deal that brought Jack Northrop's new aircraft company to town. The strip was the whole point of the arrangement: Northrop needed to roll finished airframes off the assembly line and fly them straight out to Muroc in the desert for testing. The company moved in early in 1940 and the field has been called Jack Northrop Field ever since. The factory buildings beside it later turned out Boeing 747 fuselages, and SpaceX has built rockets in them since the 2000s.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
