Isle a la Cache, the fur trade island in the Des Plaines

The French name of this 101 acre island in the Des Plaines means the island of the hiding place, from the years when the Chicago portage route carried furs between the Great Lakes and the Illinois country and traders cached goods along the way. Will County's forest preserve district bought up the whole island in the 1980s and cleared the buildings to let it go back to woods, sparing one. That building opened as a fur trade museum in 1984.
