Ishpeming, where American skiing organized
1905
Ishpeming, Michigan

Norwegian and Finnish iron miners brought their skis to the Upper Peninsula, and in 1905 the clubs met at Ishpeming to found what became the national governing body of American skiing. The National Ski Hall of Fame sits here for that reason, and the local jump is named Suicide Hill with UP directness. Skiing in America was organized by men who went underground for a living and jumped off towers for fun.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
