The hall of fame started in 1975 in the basement of the Deaf Smith County Library in Hereford, put together by the local chamber of commerce to honour women in professional rodeo. It moved into a donated house in 1981 and to Fort Worth in 1994. The 33,000 square foot building in the cultural district opened in June 2002 at a cost of $21 million.
