In the early 1930s a circle of Sierra Club members including David Brower and Richard Leonard used this rhyolite outcrop to practise rope and belay technique, because they could not reach the High Sierra every weekend. Leonard founded the Cragmont Climbing Club in 1932 specifically to advance climbing safety. In 1934 Leonard, Jules Eichorn and Bestor Robinson took what they had worked out here into Yosemite Valley and made its first technical roped climb, up Higher Cathedral Spire.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
