Igbo Landing
1803
Dunbar Creek, St. Simons Island, Georgia
Jud McCranie · CC BY-SA 4.0 · Wikimedia Commons
In 1803 a group of Igbo captives took control of the ship carrying them to St. Simons, and rather than submit to enslavement walked into Dunbar Creek together, singing, and drowned. The story became the legend of the flying Africans, carried through Gullah-Geechee tradition and into Toni Morrison and Beyonce. The site went unmarked for two centuries. The community consecrated it in 2002.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
