Hyland Hills, the ski hill the county rescued
1964
Bloomington, Minnesota
Gordy Bowen and Oscar Strand ran this slope as Normandale until a long snow drought and crude grooming equipment broke the business. The Hennepin County park district took it over and reopened it as Hyland Hills in 1964 with chairlifts and proper grooming. It now draws about 160,000 visitors a year on a hill that averages under sixty inches of natural snow, and the Minneapolis Ski Club trains on its Nordic jumps.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
