Hurley, sin city of the northwoods

Hurley boomed on iron and pine with a saloon for every few dozen residents, and lower Silver Street stayed wide open, gambling, brothels and all, decades after the rest of the Midwest closed down. Federal agents were still raiding it in the 1950s. The town's rivalry in sin with neighboring Ironwood produced the saying that the four toughest places on earth were Cumberland, Hayward, Hurley and Hell. A few Silver Street bars still work the reputation.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
