Calumet City's State Street strip, the original Sin City
1924

The town was called West Hammond until it renamed itself Calumet City in 1924. Under Prohibition its officials left bootleggers alone, and a stretch of State Street filled with speakeasies, gambling rooms and clubs that everyone called the Strip. Syndicate money ran much of it behind ballrooms and floor shows, and the trade outlasted Prohibition by decades before fading late in the century.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
