Winnfield, Louisiana

Winn Parish was poor hill country that had voted against secession, gone for the Populists, and elected socialists to town office, and Long grew up in it as the seventh of nine children. He sold books and patent medicine door to door, talked his way through law school in a year, and was elected to the railroad commission at twenty-five on a promise to break the grip of Standard Oil.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
