1935
Louisiana State Capitol, Baton Rouge
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A young doctor named Carl Weiss, whose father-in-law Long was gerrymandering out of a judgeship, stepped from behind a pillar as Long left the governor's office. Bodyguards fired more than sixty rounds into Weiss. Long died thirty hours later, aged forty-two, reportedly saying he had so much to do. He was buried on the capitol grounds under a statue of himself, facing the building.
