On the night of December 20, 1986 three Black men whose car had broken down walked into Howard Beach looking for help and were set on by a group of white teenagers outside a pizzeria. Michael Griffith, aged 23, ran onto the Belt Parkway to escape and was struck and killed by a passing car. Three of the attackers were convicted of second degree manslaughter and first degree assault in December 1987, and nine people were convicted in all. The case forced New York into a public argument about who was allowed to walk in which neighbourhood.
