Hawkins was sixteen, from East New York, and was in Bensonhurst with his younger brother and two friends on August 23, 1989 when a crowd of between ten and thirty white youths surrounded them, at least seven of them carrying baseball bats. One man in the crowd shot Hawkins twice in the chest. Four people were convicted, the gunman of second degree murder. In 2005 a former Gambino member said the group had been there at his request.
