Highland Park, the hills the last glacier left on the Brooklyn line
1901

The parks department took the slopes around the Ridgewood Reservoir and established Highland Park in 1901, then spent four years adding a lake and fountain, a flower garden, footpaths and a rustic bridge. The ridge itself is a terminal moraine, the rubble the last ice sheet dropped when it stopped, which is the reason this corner of Brooklyn has hills at all. The park straddles the borough boundary, so part of it is in Queens.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
