The Great Compromiser ran for president five times, never won, and said he would rather be right, while brokering the deals in 1820, 1833 and 1850 that postponed the war for forty years. He kept up to sixty enslaved people on this estate the whole time, freeing a handful, and left the contradiction unresolved in his will.
