Adolph Hegewisch ran the U.S. Rolling Stock Company and platted this town along a rail line in 1883, intending it as an ideal community for working men. Chicago annexed it six years later. It is the far corner of the city, with Hammond, Indiana on one side and the village of Burnham on another, and it stays hemmed in by water, rail and industry.
