Harriton House, where Charles Thomson settled the Great Seal

Rowland Ellis built the house in 1704 and called the place Bryn Mawr, Welsh for high hill. Richard Harrison bought it in 1719, renamed it Harriton and worked it as a tobacco plantation, the northernmost in the colonies. Charles Thomson married Harrison's daughter in 1774 and came into the property. He was the only Secretary the Continental Congress ever had, across its full fifteen years, and he produced the final design of the Great Seal of the United States. He retired here in 1789 and died in the house in 1824.
