By the 1880s this shore had hotels, beer gardens, bathhouses and a boardwalk nearly a third of a mile long. Happyland opened on 30 June 1906 across fifteen acres and drew thirty thousand people on its first day, with vaudeville, a Japanese tea garden and a shooting gallery. Fires in 1896 and 1919 tore through the strip, and Robert Moses cleared what was left in the 1930s for the boardwalk that opened in 1937.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
