John Roesink built this park in 1930 after a fire wrecked Mack Park, and moved his Detroit Stars of the Negro National League into it. Turkey Stearnes, Cool Papa Bell and Smokey Joe Williams played here as home men, and Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson came through with visiting clubs. The 1930 Negro National League title series was decided on this field. It is one of only about a dozen Negro league ballparks left anywhere, and the playing surface now carries Stearnes's name.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
