Two gunmen walked into the Lafayette Bar and Grill in Paterson at about half past two in the morning on June 17, 1966 and killed three people. The middleweight boxer Rubin Carter and John Artis were convicted of the murders in 1967 and convicted again at a retrial in 1976. Bob Dylan wrote a song for Carter in 1975. In 1985 a federal judge granted his habeas petition and threw out the convictions, finding the state had built its case on racial appeal and withheld evidence, and Carter walked out after nineteen years.
