Grand Portage, the eight-and-a-half-mile carry

The Pigeon River is unnavigable at its mouth, so everything moving between Lake Superior and the interior went over this trail on men's backs, two ninety-pound packs at a time, at a trot. Every July the North West Company held a rendezvous here where canoes from Montreal met canoes from the Athabasca. It sits on Ojibwe land, and the band has operated the monument jointly with the Park Service since.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
