Gonzaque Village, defence worker housing by Paul Williams and Richard Neutra
1942
Watts, Los Angeles, California
Built in 1942 as Hacienda Village, this went up under a wartime exemption from the ban on new construction because low income defence workers had first claim on the units, and it was designed around materials the armed forces did not need, metal above all. The team was unusually strong for public housing: Paul Revere Williams led it, with Richard Neutra, Welton Becket, Adrian Wilson and Walter Wurdeman. Seventy one single storey buildings hold 182 units across about eighteen acres. Los Angeles renamed it in December 2000 for Ozie B. Gonzaque, a South Central resident known for decades of volunteer work.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
