George McJunkin, born enslaved in Texas and by 1908 a ranch foreman and self-taught naturalist, spotted enormous bones in a flood-cut arroyo near Folsom and spent years failing to get scientists to come look. They finally dug in 1926, four years after his death, and found spear points lodged among extinct ice age bison, the first accepted proof that humans had been in the Americas for over ten thousand years. The cowboy who found it got his credit two generations late.
