A gravel operation between Clovis and Portales kept turning up huge stone spear points among mammoth bones, and the excavations that followed defined the Clovis culture, for decades the accepted first Americans, named for the nearest town. The type site of an entire continental prehistory is a draw on the high plains that most drivers pass without a glance. The dig faces and a small museum are open in season.
