General Order No. 11 empties four counties
August 25, 1863
Missouri border counties
After Quantrill's raid on Lawrence, the Union depopulated four Missouri counties by order, some 20,000 people given fifteen days to leave. The emptied country was burned over and called the Burnt District. It is among the harshest measures taken against American civilians by their own government.
