1861
Greene County, Missouri
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The first major battle west of the Mississippi, fought by a Union force outnumbered better than two to one that attacked anyway. Nathaniel Lyon was shot leading a counter-attack and became the first Union general killed in the war. The Union lost the field but kept Missouri, which was the point.
