Garrison launches The Liberator
January 1, 1831
Boston, Massachusetts
He had no money, no subscribers and slept on the office floor, and he opened by refusing to moderate: he was in earnest, he would not equivocate, and he would be heard. A Boston mob dragged him through the streets with a rope in 1835. He ran the paper for 35 years and stopped only when slavery ended.
