Garibaldi and Meucci in one Staten Island cottage
1851
Rosebank, Staten Island

Antonio Meucci was making candles on Staten Island and working on a device for carrying the voice down a wire when Giuseppe Garibaldi arrived in exile in 1851. Meucci took him in and Garibaldi stayed two years before returning to unify Italy. The cottage was moved in 1907 to become a memorial and is now a museum holding Garibaldi's red shirt and models of Meucci's telephone.
