The State Lunatic Hospital at Norristown opened in the spring of 1880, and by the end of that September it held 295 men and 251 women. It was the first Pennsylvania state hospital to step away from the Kirkbride plan of one enormous winged building, laying out separate structures on a cottage model instead. The population reached about 3,250 by 1928 and close to five thousand in the 1940s. It is still an operating state psychiatric hospital serving five counties.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
