Fruitvale, named for the fruit nursery that got there first
1906
Fruitvale, Oakland, California
Henderson Luelling planted a nursery of apricot and cherry trees in this valley in the middle of the 19th century, and the name Fruit Vale stuck to the district that grew up around it. Refugees from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake pushed the population up sharply and the unincorporated area was annexed into Oakland soon after. It now holds the city's largest Latino community, a little more than half of the neighbourhood.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
