Friscoville Street runs its gambling clubs a block past the parish line

Friscoville Street was platted in 1906 on the Arabi side of the Orleans Parish line, close enough for the Canal Street streetcar to deliver customers and far enough that New Orleans police had no jurisdiction. Clubs and gambling houses worked the street until the statewide crackdown of the early 1950s shut them. The sixteen acre district listed on the National Register in 1998 still holds 76 contributing buildings, among them a church, a brick school, an old jail and a former casino.
