Franklin and Armfield, the largest slave trading firm in the country
1828
Alexandria, Virginia
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
Isaac Franklin and John Armfield set up here in 1828 and built the biggest slave trading business in the United States, buying people in Virginia and Maryland and shipping them to markets in Natchez and New Orleans. Ship manifests held by the National Archives account for at least 5,000 people trafficked through this address and the pens behind it. The pens are gone. The building at 1315 Duke Street is now the Freedom House Museum.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
