The largest slave market in America
1830
Common Street, New Orleans
More enslaved people were sold here than anywhere else in the country, perhaps 135,000 through the 1800s, most brought overland from the upper South. The trade ran out of hotels and showrooms along Common, Gravier and Esplanade. Almost nothing is marked.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
