Founders' Rock, where Berkeley got its name
1866
Berkeley, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Trustees of the College of California stood on this outcrop at Hearst and Gayley in 1860 to dedicate the land they had just bought. Six years later Frederick Billings recalled a line of Bishop Berkeley's verse about empire moving west, and the new town took the bishop's name. The graduating class bolted a plaque to the rock in 1896.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
